To know Reiki, you must experience it. Words sometimes can not possibly do justice for some things, and Reiki certainly falls into that category. Reiki has been and continues to be a key component in my own healing journey. I hope you take the opportunity to experience it for yourself, animals, or both!
Dr. Mehmet Oz said of Reiki and acupuncture, "...the next big frontier...in medicine is energy medicine..."
WHAT IS REIKI?
"Reiki creates the space where healing possibilities exist." Kathleen Prasad, co-author 'Animal Reiki' www.animalreikisource.com.
The Word:
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) translates from the Japanese words Rei meaning "spirit" and Ki meaning "energy;" thus "spiritual energy." Another common translation is "universal life force energy." Some cultures refer to this energy as Prana, Qi, or Chi.
The System:
Reiki is a system like Qigong and Tai Chi that enables a practitioner to access this readily available, infinite energy from the universe through easy to learn techniques. The system was developed by Usui Mikao in the early 1900s. Originally the system was used for spiritual development and is used today for "hands-on" healing. "Practitioners" of this system are not "healers" since we are not using our personal energy.
Uses:
Reiki is a gentle, yet powerful, holistic healing method
for the mind, body, and spirit. It can do no harm and always goes
to the highest good. Reiki is being used in hospitals, clinics, and
hospices around the world. There is a growing body of research to
support the efficacy of Reiki.

HOW DOES REIKI WORK?
Reiki is simplicity. Among other things, it simply creates a "relaxation response." Kathie Lipinski, RN, MSG, CH, writes in an article for 'Reiki News Magazine:'
"We know that the most common (and highly desirable) outcome from receiving Reiki is the relaxation response.
We know that stress can cause:
*Decreased function of the immune system *Increased heart rate (pulse) and increased blood pressure *Tense muscles (which may lead to pinched nerves and decreased oxygen flow to muscles and other parts of the body) *Shallow breathing *Increased levels of stress hormones, which wreak havoc with blood sugar control and weight gain *Negative coping mechanisms such as excess smoking, drinking, eating, or other behaviors
In contrast, the relaxation response of the body includes:
*Dilation (widening) of blood vessels so that blood flows more easily throughout the body *Lowering of blood pressure and heart rate (pulse) *Slow and deep breathing *Muscle relaxation - oxygen and nutrients can then go where they are needed and nourish the body *Strengthening of the immune system
Reiki is an excellent way to promote the relaxation response."
Reiki is not something that is done to you, rather it is something that we do together. Practitioners are facilitators/conduits of the the energy. You or your animal are an active participant in the process. Because the body has the ability and is designed to heal itself, it will draw the energy where it needs and wants it like a magnet. However, you can be completely skeptical about Reiki, yet it can still be wonderfully effective. I used to be a skeptic myself, and so have many people I have worked with. Animals, however, seem to 'know' all about this energy.
